Sam Cotton January Report

Welcome to Lake Fork! The weather here has been typical for January. We’ve had ice and snow some days and other days near 70 degrees. The water temp is currently in the mid to upper forties depending on the day. The lake is currently 1.15 feet low. The fishing has been kind of slow following some of these major fronts that we’ve had. The good news is the water temp has come up some since then and it looks like the weather pattern for the next week or so is holding fairly stable with temps (mid 50’s to 60). As the water warms, the fish will start to migrate and the bite can change every day. In this colder weather, I have been targeting deeper fish. They seem to be a little more consistent; however, on a sunny day following a slight warming trend I have been able to get bit more in the 6-10 foot range around timber. The best tactic for this has been suspending jerk baits. The deeper bite (20-35 Feet) has been best on a drop shot rigged with a Lake Fork Trophy Lures 4 ½ “ Hyper Finesse Worm in Black Magic. As we move toward February, the shallower bite will start to improve and it will be time for the lipless baits around grass and shallow stumps. Chatter baits are another great choice for shallow fish this time of year. I prefer a green pumpkin skirt with a LFT Live Magic Shad in sun perch for the trailer. Hope this info helps and as always if I can be of any help or if you would like to book a trip, please feel free to contact me. You can contact me by email at or you can call or text message me at 903-268-3399. Also, please visit my website to find out more information at

If you are in the market for a boat this year, take a look at the new Skeeter ZX250. If you haven’t seen it yet, you can contact Chris Knight at Nautical Mile Marine in Tyler.
